In
2006, I designed and had a revised engine hatch produced. The rectangular
vent opening was moved forward and the hole for the armored cover
was opened up. A special ring was made to mount the armored cover
since the original cross support was eliminated. The hatch was designed
to fit Vince Abbott's armored cover and lock detail.
Two
types of hatches were designed and made. Type 3 fit the mid to late
version Tigers. Type 2 was designed for early version Tigers and
had an extra set of lock detail and a different position for the
catch hook.
Two
mounting holes for the hatch stops were positioned closer to the
outer edge. This modification moves the stop arm outside the hatch
edge to permit it to work like the real Tiger. The Armortek hatch
stop base will have to be modified to fit the new engine hatch mounting
holes.
Armored
Cover and Ring
The ring serves as a base for the armored cover. It is placed into
the top of the opening.
Close-up of the ring mounted in the opening. Make sure the ring is
placed on the top of the hatch and not the bottom.
Use a good metal based epoxy like JB Weld to secure the ring to the
vent opening. It is recommended that a thin layer is applied to each
inside surface. Carefully mate the two surfaces. Clean any excess
epoxy that might have got pushed onto the hatch top. Place the assembly
face down on a hard flat surface, center the ring in the opening and
apply more epoxy to fill any gaps. Allow to cure overnight.
Viewed from the underside, the result should look like this. Now the
base is ready to take the armored cover.
Next update will discuss the attachment of the armored cover to the
ring.
Hatch
Stops
This picture shows the correct position of the engine hatch stop on
a real Tiger. Notice how the pivot point for the arm is outside the
hatch edge.
The original Armortek hatch stop base modified to the profile shown.
The base of the stop is filed down to 15.5mm. This work brings the
new base edge to the inside of the original outer hole and eliminates
the original outer hole.
With the modified base on the hatch and the inner mounting hole lined
up with the inner mounting hole, the stop edge should line up with
the engine hatch edge.
A new outer hole will have to be drilled into the modified Armortek
base and then tapped for a M3 screw. The mounting holes are 6.593mm
on center. An easy way to drill the hole is to use the hatch as a
template. Mount the base to the hatch using the original threaded
hole. Use a #40 drill to make a new 2.5mm hole in the base and tap.
